I have 5 NCR's; 3 300's, 2 400's. One 300 & one 400 are jammed so I will try your solutions. One of the 300's that I have was dropped, (purchased for $40.00) so obviously suffered damage, but mostly to the wood; it is repaired & working. Wife & I are seniors & will be moving to smaller residence in Oceanside, therefore selling all but 1 400. I want to have all machines operable to sell so might need some repair work if I can't unjam. I am an I.T. manager, but love writing historical fiction. I am currently writing a story centered in Bodie, California, circa 1932. It includes an NCR model 852-xx register (Ser # 2228896), which my wife purchased at a yard sale. It is currently frozen and the crank won't turn. I would like to restore it but I need keys and a good manual to make sure I don't mess things up. Any advice you can provide would be an immeasurable help.

I have acquired an NCR Cash Register Serial #1190597 Model 359. I am trying to do a modest restoration and have some difficulties and could use some advice and maybe some parts if you have anything available. The marble piece below the keys is broken on one end and the piece is missing, Also I do not have the keys to the 2 locks on the left hand side, the top cover and the key on the right hand side is stuck in the lock. If you had a manual for this register and the keys I would be very interested. I am sure as I get further into this register it is very likely other things will come up that need replacing. I will touch base with from time to time as I do need a little advice too. Cheers, Gerald

40 years ago we had an employee remove the brass from a register and had it refinished. It has been in storage all this time; and I want to put it back together, but I need a diagram to show me where to put all of the screws and springs that were taken out to remove the brass. Model 1064-G purchased 1/28/1913. Can you refer me to anyone who might have the plans/assembly diagram needed to put it back together??? We have "all" of the parts.

I worked for JCPenney and for 12 years and was privliledged to travel and workt in about 30 small town locations in Kentucky and Tennesee. Most of these stores were built around 1929, a time of great expansion for the company. I saw remnants of both pneumatic and wire systems but unfortunately most of it was gone. I did manage to find a Lamson brass tube in one store and around 1988 I bought an ornate Lamson piece, the U-shaped return, from an antique dealer in Winchester, Kentucky. I will send a photo to your e-mail address. Thanks for archiving this information, I think it's fascinating.

I am looking for a picture of a National Cash Register bookkeeping machine that I learned to operate in 1958 working for a linen supply company. It was huge, about six (6) feet long and had many columns of keys. I had to learn to use it to record drivers' logbooks of linen supplies that they sold daily to customers such as hospitals, hotels, caterers, cafes, restaurants, nursing homes, and other businesses that required the need for multiple fresh, clean linens. It filled a small room where I worked by myself. I am writing my 2nd book and wanted to include a picture of it next to my description.

I was fascinated, as a kid, with anything electric or mechanical. I remember department stores using Lamson tubes, quite extensively. I recently serviced some alarm systems in half a dozen gas stations, here in Auckland. I was surprised to find Lamson tubes working to send cash from the cashiers to the office safe. Lamson are still building systems and the most innovative one is used to send burgers and fries to the tables, in a cafe in Christchurch !

Hi, I am in desperate need of help. I have a 1948 Manufactured NCR Series 1000. It is in pretty good shape but the drawer won't seat all of the way in, the left three numbers on the printer head are raised and stuck. I bought it in this condition, but a few months ago I got it to work, the indicators turned, drawer opened and the bell rang. Can anyone please help me out? Somewhere I read this was a commen problem on the Series 1000 but that was a year or two ago when I first purchased it and I can't find that comment again anywhere. Your help would be much appreciated and my wife would appreciate my frustration level to be lower too. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Tony

What a great site, imagine my surprise seeing photos of the Lamson system, I am sure there were others which reached our shores. In our fb site, ,on seeing a photo of the store, Cann's of Albury everyone comments about the "thing-a-me" which carries money overhead. I remembered the name as the later Lamson-Paragon Co. printed my family's docket books; they also had a print works close by in Wodonga, Victoria.

What does "X-E" mean? There are indications that this machine originally was electrically powered. Anyways; nice to have found Your page, and I'm very curious about this machine! Sincerely Jan Edling p.s. Is there any chance to find an actuator motor for this machine? d.s.

I have seen your site in the past, figured I would say Hello! I own a couple Brass NCR registers: Class 300 27-key size 47 1/4 in good operating order; also Class 300/317 15-key "candy store" that works but needs restoration. Also a large type 852-XX in an ugly black steel cabinet I need to repaint. Plus two class 100 registers. I will be checking out your care tips page before long! Thank you!

I am looking for info on my National cash register I inherited tom mom. She collected lots of beautiful things and we never talked about this. Model 63. The Bohemian design, I think. I can't hardly find this model anywhere online. Beautiful condition but top plate missing. She had another register that I was told she had gold- dipped but she sold this shortly before her unexpected death last fall. Just looking for info on rarity and general worth.

Comments

I was thrilled to find your excellent site. I just purchased an NCR model #317. I am curious, did the stores that used this model just charge rounded off to the nearest nickle? How could they make a sale of 57 cents?

Comments

I have a National Cash Register and was looking up info on how to properly identify it so I can sell it on Ebay and/or CL. Your site is very informative and I'll probably email you about getting an appraisal soon. Thanks for all the work you did and that you offer the general public on these machines. Really very impressive and thorough.

I saw a lamson carrier as pictured in an antiques store. It looked interesting (but had no cables associated with it, just a complete unit). I was curious and found your informative page. Thanks

Comments

Just a comment: My wife and I were remembering, as children, trips to the store with our mothers. I recalled seeing, and being fascinated by the carrier system in the (I believe) JC Penney store in Warsaw, IN, in the mid 1950's. Your video is exactly the system, as I remember, they had working there. The only difference I remember was a constant click, click, click, of metal couplers passing over the pulleys. I assumed the couplers were splices made in the rope to repair a break. I would love to understand the technology behind the carriers "knowing" what station to return to. Perhaps you could elaborate on this one day. Thanks for sharing your hobby.

We had a restored brass NCR cash register that was recently stolen from our home while we were on vacation. I do not have the model or serial number but have a picture of one that may be ours. The picture is from Craigs List and may be someone trying to sell what was stolen. I would like to get an idea of what you think it is worth. Will be glad to pay the $20. Thank you.

Comments

Iisa wondering about getting the 20$ appraisal for my NCR cash register if you still do that. From your website I believe it dates to 1902. Serial # is: S228580G. Underneath that are the #'s 313. The bottom of the drawer says it is "Finish A." I've taken some pictures but need a little more detail on where I forward them to, payment, etc. Any brief information based on teh above would be appreciated in the interim. Thx Paul

My father was an NCR repair tech. from close to the time of my birth (1957) to 1992 he saw much of NCR's mechanical era including its demise after AT&T's aquasition. He gave me a brass model #2 that he had restored himself to pristine condition, however I gave it back to him so that he could present it to one of his fellow technicians when he retired. as a kid he gave me and my brother several cash registers to take apart -- I still have some of the parts from those childhood experiences. I also have a few of my fathers tools, and tool briefcases. I love your web page thanks for putting it up. James Francom

I'm 78Yrs. Worked for NCR 40Yrs. In 1950's NCR gave Cust. $15.00 trade-in for one. We destroyed many, many of them using sledge hammers to get them out of circulation. NCR said they were made "to good" because they would never wear out. We sold them at junk yark for .89 cents. Clayton Spense, Haltom City, Tx kept a lot of the parts & now restores & sell them across the US. I have his business card.

I have a #2 NCR from 1890. Serial #27568. This Registers the amount of your Purchase, for the top plate. It has the twisted rod with caps on top of the cash drawn. Also in the scroll work just underneath the glass window reads National Cash Register in the scroll itself which I found to be quite unique. My question is this. How do I tell if Tiffany designed this particular one?

Was just wondering if you could give me some information on the counter cover. It seems the one I am restoring came with an untapped customer counter plate and dollars/cents counter cover plate. I am just assuming, after some visual inspections of the orginal machine screws, the the tap could be a #3 @ 66 tpi. If correct would you happen to know the drill bit size...if not correct, do you happen to know the drill size and tap #? Sorry, its a model 313 shipped during the year 1911 by the serial #. Sincerely, Craig A. Curtis

I was very Impressed with your collection and the amount of time and effort you have put into the registers. I have just today, in fact, aquired my great grandfather's register from his store. It is a 736 Plain. With an S....It actually has a label under the drawer which shows it was sold to the US Army and who inspected it and there is a tracer number as well. It all still works. I have his vintage coke machine as well and I think I may restore the register to match. Maybe Do it in a Mountain Dew theme just to mix things up. I would like to find out about the tracer number. Is there a reference you know of? It would be cool to find out where this register was during it's service because I am also an Army veteran. Again, Wonderful job on your website and collection. I could only dream ! ! !

I'm an old retired NCR salesman. I have one small 300 Model in need of amount indicators. I don't know where tofind them. I am also looking to buy a 300 Model in fair condition. The owner wants $700.00 for it. I don't think it's worth that much.

Good morning, I recently acquired a 1915 National Register (Dolphins) and would like a rough estimate of what it might be worth. All of the keys work, its pretty clean, i have checked and it is not a replica the bottom of the drawer has the paper of authenticity on it with the same serial # as the machine (1488613) and it model #347. i have pictures if they are needed. Thanks, Kirsten Smith

Just having a look; there is so much history behind these registers.

I have just acquired a NCR and would like to know more about it.

Comments

I have a model 6 NCR brass register. Unfortunately, the serial # plate is missing. The last date shown on the patent numbers is June 13, 99. Is the missing serial # a setback? There is no paper under the drawer to provide a hint and the "Amount Purchased" sign is missing. It works fine. Would this machine still be desirable in the market? I want to say, your site is the most informative I have come across. Thanks from those of us who aren't experienced in this area of collecting.

I am in the cash register business (41 years) and we were founded in 1952 (Dumac Busienss Systems, Inc.). We were a Cash Register Dealer for Sweda, Data Terminal Systems and NCR(in the 1990's). Today StoreNext & Panasonic. We are building a "museum" of registers we've traded in over the years ranging from NCR brassy units to the NCR 2127 still in use today to Sweda 46 & 76 to DTS 545 and Panasonics. I have been trying to find information on NCR's from the 1920's to the 1950's since those are not covered as well as the units prior to 1915.

I am looking for a NCR model 311 or 313 or 317 in brass or bronze (red Brass). I have just started collecting NCR's and want to build a nice collection. If you have one or know someone who has one for sale please let me know. Thanks

I recently purchased a National cash register when buying beer signs. It is nickel plated model 317. Serial number is S155097M but from pictures I have seen it looks like a 313 because there is no printer on the right side. Because it's serial number begins with S I know it has been reworked or resold. The drawer face is nickel plated brass which has some wear around the edges so the brass is exposed. The rest of the machine has a pretty good finish with minor wear on some of the corners. It does not have the total sale top sign and the top pieces do not have the screw holes to hold one. Under the lid there is one dollar counter and one cent counter under one single glass cover. All the keys work except I cannot make multiple indicators go up when pushing a key down partially and trying to push another. I will probally need to send you pictures for a full appraisal and to find out why the numbers and the machine do not match up. Thanks, Jay

I got this NCR register from a Mr. Brown, who kind of dealt in old items back in the early 70's. He picked it up in CO. I guess I would sell it for a fair price but it needs "shining" up first. THE NUMBER ON THIS MACHINE IS 1075525 AND THE NUMBER UNDER THAT ONE IS 442. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE HISTORY.
